IISER Kolkata to host National Space Science Symposium 2022
New Delhi, Dec 20: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is organising a five-day National Space Science Symposium (NSSS) from 31st January to 4th February 2022, with IISER Kolkata as the host institute.
ISRO holds the symposium once every two years along with other science institutes across India. It is a forum for the presentation of new results and to discuss recent developments in space science, planetary exploration, and space and ground-based astronomy programs being pursued across the country.
As part of the program, several public talks on space science and technology would be conducted. In addition, a physical space science exhibition would be held at the Science City in Kolkata. Further, several space-themed contests would be held for students – a quiz competition for high school students, video and poster making for school and undergraduate students, and a painting contest for children. It is open to everyone in the country. The registration and submission forms for all contests can be accessed at http://www.cessi.in/nsss/Outreach.html
The quiz contest is open for schools to register with a team of three students or less, who are in classes 9-12. The registration will open at 10 am on 24 December and the first 50 schools to register will be chosen for the preliminary round on 2 Jan 2022, followed by the finals on 8 Jan 2022. The first three winning teams will get cash prizes as well as a goody’s bag of ISRO memorabilia.
The video and poster competitions have separate categories for students in classes 9-12 and undergraduate students. There is a list of themes for the students to choose from, to make a short video or an artist’s interpretation to explain scientific concepts. The top three winners will get cash prizes in addition to ISRO memorabilia.
The painting and drawing competition will be on a variety of space themes for pre-primary and a separate one for primary school children. Every school can select up to 5 paintings from their students and submit a collage of them. The winners will be presented with ISRO memorabilia.
The deadline for submission of the video, poster, and painting entries is 15 January.
Announcing this, a press release from the NSSS outreach committee and IISER, Kolkata, said, “We invite students and schools from across India to join us in these programs and enliven the National Space Science Symposium 2022. Keep a watch on the website for further details”. (India Science Wire)
